God

'God' is, in a sense, just a word,

A sound we make in reference to

what cannot be described or explained;

And the word means so many different things,

offers invitations to so many different people,

speaks in so many different languages;

How strange, God, that you could be so comfortable

to connect with us in such a small word,

to clothe yourself in the frailty of language,

to love us through our own limited ways of being and knowing;

How incredible that you,

so infinite, so complex, so all-encompassing,

should serve us so well,

with such humility and sacrifice,

that even our flesh was not too small.

We praise you, God, that you,

whose name we seem never able to speak just right,

would stoop and serve

the likes of us.

Amen.
