Affirmation

How clearly and proudly you spoke, O God!
    How unmistakeable your affirmation
        of your beloved Son!
    And what strength he must have drawn from it
        as he turned to face what was to come.

How incredible your affirmation of us, O God!
    How simple and inglorious we are,
        and yet you embodied yourself in our flesh!
    And how you have opened our eyes by revealing on the mountain
        the glory that human flesh can contain.

How awesome is the calling you give us, O God!
    How easy it is to embrace
        your ministry of affirmation!
    And how healing, how transforming it can be
        to speak simple words of encouragement and praise
        to everyone we encounter.

We thank you, O God, for the power of affirmation,
    and for revealing it to us
        through Christ’s radiant transfiguration.
    Teach us to live as those who always choose affirmation
        over criticism, skepticism and hatred.

In Christ’s glorious name, we pray.
Amen.
