Discover the Abundant Life available in the Sacrament of Holy Communion
The abundance that flows from thanksgiving; the freedom that forgiveness brings; the security that hope provides; the connection of a caring community; the awareness
of the divine at all times, in all situations - these are just some of the gifts that are hidden in the simple meal that we know as the Sacrament of Holy Communion.
In Food for the Road - Life Lessons from the Lord's Table John van de Laar explores the sacrament of holy communion, and unlocks its hidden gifts, opening doors to new inspiration for worship and for living.

"Food
for the Road, by John van de Laar, is
both fresh and nourishing. For this reason I have repeatedly used John’s
liturgies when gathering with others for the sacrament of communion. John
has the gift of a turn of phrase that enables well worn words and well trodden
traditions to explode with new meaning and mystery. I am grateful to John
for sharing his friendship with God so openly and trustingly – for through
it my own friendship with God has grown. Thanks John."

"In Food for the Road, John van de Laar has not only managed to retain the eternal truths embodied in the sacrament of holy communion, but has been able to convey these in a language which has made them even more relevant to both old and young. I wish I had had access to this book, or something even remotely similar, when I was still in the normal pastoral ministry."
Rev. Ian T. Webber - Retired Methodist Minister

From the Cover of Food for the Road
“Around the post-modern world there is a widespread yearning in the human heart for an authentic experience of living worship. People are longing for a deep personal encounter with God and a spiritually orientated way of life that will empower them to live creatively and compassionately. Thankfully, God is raising up a new breed of writers, and I believe
John van de Laar is one of them, who are helping us find our way forward into a more sacred way of living. They speak with a fresh voice. We will do well to listen carefully to what the Spirit may be saying through them.”

"The sacrament of holy communion can become something that happens like
clockwork once a month during Sunday services, and sometimes also
during small group meetings or among church leaders and staff. As a
worship leader, it can come down to choosing special music and making
sure there is space in between the guitars and drums for the elements
to be distributed to kneeling congregants, while ensuring that the
service does not run longer than one hour!!
Thank you for your book which highlights the many different things that communion really
is, and in a way that is easy to read but definitely not simple! I
loved that this book was not just theology in theory but comes out of
your own life experience, which you were brave enough to share quite
openly!
This book is written in such a way that once in one's library it
will be constantly used and referred to. It is a study guide, and can
be used in small groups or alone as a learning tool, with the questions
at the end of each chapter guiding discussion and thoughts. It is also
a devotional help, alone or with a congregation - the liturgies are
beautiful, poetic and sometimes surprising in the modern expression
of a centuries old pattern of worship. It is also a resource book for
worship services in general.
I first came across the book during Lent a couple of years ago, when I used it as a personal devotional guide. Since then we have used
the liturgies, most especially "A Liturgy for the Spiritual Feast", in
our evening service which has a more contemporary style of worship, and
we have also used parts of liturgies, along with visuals, as a call to
worship at all our services. The Creed (or proclamation of faith)
sections are wonderful for all services and not just communion, as are
the prayers of intercession. "
